What is Diabetes ?
Almost everyone has heard of diabetes. You've read about it in
the news, saw something on TV (more than likely a commercial), and
most likely you know someone with diabetes. But do you really
understand what it is?
Most people when they think of diabetes, they think of sugar...too
much sugar in the body. More specifically it's too much sugar in
the blood. You may recall at one point hearing about juvenile or
insulin-dependant diabetes - it's now called Type I.
The other type of diabetes that you may be familiar with is what
was previously called adult-onset diabetes or non-insulin dependant
diabetes. It's now known as Type II diabetes.
Type II Diabetes Mellitus is by far, the most common form of
diabetes. In fact, it accounts for over 90% of all diagnosed cases
of diabetes. It is not only found in adults...we are now seeing
more and more children and adolescents being diagnosed with
diabetes. Why? Most commonly…lifestyle. We’ll discuss that further
when we talk about prevention.
Type II Diabetes is associated with:
- Older Age
- Obesity
- Family History of Diabetes, especially first generation
- History of gestational diabetes
- Impaired glucose metabolism
- Physical inactivity
- Race/Ethnicity
- African Americans
- Hispanic/Latino Americans
- American Indians
- and some Asian American and Native Hawaiians or other Pacific
Islands
